Fertility Monitors

If I had to pick the single-most important tool that I used when trying to get pregnant, it would be hands-down, my fertility (ovulation) monitor.  I swear that thing knew my body almost better than I did!

It’s a bit pricy up-front, but it’s worth every red cent.  The one I used was the Clear Blue Easy monitor, though there are new entries on the market now.  The kit contains a battery-operated unit with an LCD screen and a slot to insert test sticks.   Boxes of test sticks last about 3 months which is a small price to pay to be so accurate.

Every woman is different.  Some ovulate on day 12, others on day 19.  Some books like to say that ovulation takes place on day 14 but that’s very much a generalization.  Sperm can only survive on average 1-4 days (some hardy fellas last longer but aren’t as strong toward the end).  You can see that you have to be pretty darn close in determining your own ovulation date if you’re going to get the egg and the sperm together at the same time.

Similar to a pregancy test, the stick is activated by urine and is inserted into the monitor.  The monitor reads the results on the stick, calculates the day of the month according to your cycle, and determines if you are fertile or not.

The monitor detects the amount of LH hormone in your body prior to ovulation.  When the amount of hormone is at its peak, the monitor basically tells you it’s time to get busy!  I used the monitor in conjunction with my ovulation chart (as a backup) but found that the monitor was much more acurate.

After a cycle or two, the monitor “learns” your cycle and is more accurate the second and subsequent months.  I used my monitor to keep track of my period, even during months when I wasn’t trying to get pregnant, and I shamelessly admit that six years later I still use it for that purpose.  I wish I’d had a device to alert me of an impending period when I was a teenager!

If you’re serious about monitoring your cycles and maximizing your chances of conception, a fertility monitor is a must-have.  Seriously.

I recommend the Clear Blue Easy because a) it was easy, and b) it required absolutely no maintenance other than a rare battery replacement.  I never had to replace it with any other brand.  I guess it’s kind of like being tied to a brand of tampons; once you’re set on a brand there’s usually not much shopping around.
